Biography Continued...
Chess Smith has a love for writing passionate, personal & positive songs about mental health and hitting back at toxic behaviour. With her soaring, emotive power vocals, engaging stage presence, and uncanny ability to write relatable songs with unforgettable hooks, Chess is ready to shake up the music scene, and she's not holding back. Her music is all about radical self-love, empowerment, and overcoming adversity – in a world full of competition, comparison, narcissism, and self-doubt, Chess' uplifting, anthemic songs are a welcome reminder that when we know our worth and love ourselves, we are unstoppable.
In 2020, Chess suffered a severe nervous breakdown as a result of narcissistic abuse, which forced her to take a long break from music. When she eventually started her recovery, it felt like the right time to solely focus on herself & her solo career. Realising that there was so little positive, uplifting messaging about surviving abuse & dealing with trauma, she chose to write music about her experiences in hopes it may help other people. Stepping away from rock and into an alternative pop musical kaleidoscope for a fresh start… A New Reign.
In 2022, Chess began work on 'Saving Lilibet', her most personal EP to date, co-writing with multi-talented Kent producer Fuji Hideout. The EP was released in July 2025 to great critical acclaim, and throughout the year she has embarked on a series of headline shows at numerous esteemed Kent venues, including the Art Club in Dover, The Music Workshop in Folkestone, and a final spectacular EP launch show at The Penny Theatre in Canterbury on 8th August 2025. Described by promoter Andrew Kesby as "No question one [of] the best female artist in Kent right now", Chess is making serious waves on the music scene, with an important message, and a powerful voice that will not be silenced.

Fuji Hideout

Fuji Hideout is my incredible producer and co-writer, an amazing solo artist, and an all round musical genius! He plays keys and sings backing vocals in the band, and he never fails to hype up the audience.
He's an 80s child raised in millennial years, having been born into a musical family -and he's also an exceptional, multi-talented artist in his own right. His new solo project is well underway, and you can find his latest tunes on streaming platforms now!

Izolda 'Ivy' Reeder
Ivy is my ethereal magical violin maestro! She's an incredible violinist, and I've been lucky enough to record with her on my new project - she can usually be found hypnotising the audience with her impossibly gorgeous playing, and she also sings backing vocals in the band.
Ivy is also a member of The Rox Bishop Band, a hugely popular local pop/rock group, so she's no stranger to a good party!

Critics' Reviews
BBC Introducing Kent
"I was pretty blown away by this from Chess Smith - [Disassociate is] an empowering and strong self-love anthem to blast out loud [...] PREACH!"
Fortitude Magazine
"Smith’s soaring vocal range … the parallels between Smith’s and Hayley Williams’ vocals can no longer be ignored"
Aural Aggravation
"stirring, soulful and incredibly slick pop. That she’s drawing on experience and processing through art is powerful. That she speaks for so many is a grim reality. Chess is back, alright, and her voice needs to be heard.""
Metal Planet Music
"Its pretty clear she is a star in the making"
Get in Her Ears
"raw, impassioned vocals"
Back Seat Mafia
"The vocals of Chess Smith are strong and full of passion, range and power"

The Zine UK
"With a past in rock bands and a voice that won’t back down, Chess has carved out a space for vulnerability that roars."
"Powerfully delivered with feeling...
'Bounce Back' is defiantly soulful with suitably bombastic beats... a tuneful alternative #popmusic mantra for us to sing out aloud, or in our heads, with radical #selflove "
