Chess Smith - I'm Dead to You (And That's OK) Release Press Kit
"I'm Dead to You (And That's OK)"
New Single by Chess Smith
Release Date 22nd May 2026
Following on from the success of her Saving Lilibet EP, released to critical acclaim last year, Chess is storming 2026 in spectacular style with her new single, I'm Dead to You (And That's OK), out now on all major streaming platforms.
"I don’t wanna be your cake,
'Cause you’re just gonna taste it then waste it..."
With raucous energy, lusciously layered power vocals, and a hook that stays with you for days, I'm Dead to You is a delicious concoction of scalding social commentary, simmering vocal harmonies, and searingly celebratory choruses that meld to create a delectably upbeat musical morsel that leaves you wanting another slice... and then another...
The single explores the very relatable fallout that occurs when relationships break down - and how women in particular often suffer the loss of friendships, support networks, and even their careers, as sides are taken, battle lines are drawn, and the people who you thought you could trust show their true colours... The people who you gave so much of yourself to, only for them to treat you like you never existed - or worse, tear you down, and drag your name through the mud.
More importantly though, I'm Dead to You is about turning these often painful realisations into positive self-affirmations - those people were never your friends... so don't waste your energy missing something that you never truly had, and instead be happy that they're no longer part of your life. Take away their power, take back your name, and eventually they'll be consumed by their own toxicity... just as surely as they once tried to consume you.

I'm Dead to You (And That's OK)
Took a break to give myself time,
You held the red flag and I read the signs,
It was a long way round, but I’m over it now,
Yeah
Saw the world in another light,
They're only there when you’re flying high,
It’s a shallow world but I’m a big girl now.
Mmmm
To those who thought I wasn’t enough,
and those who thought I was too much...
I don’t wanna be your cake,
Spit me out your sour mouth,
I don’t need no flake,
I’m not gonna fake it 'til I make it.
Don’t say my name,
Spit it out your filthy mouth,
I don’t wanna be your cake,
'Cause you’re just gonna taste it then waste it.
I’m dead to you, I’m dead to you
I am happy to say,
I’m dead to you, I’m dead to you,
And that’s ok!
Lyrics
I wish I knew I had nothing to lose, and that there was nothing to prove,
They were really not there and they really didn’t care, aha
Sucked my blood, pulled the rug from my feet,
Oh why the hell did I people please?
Now I focus on those who don’t live in the smoke,
Yeah
To those who thought I wasn’t enough,
and those who thought I was too much...
I don’t wanna be your cake,
Spit me out your sour mouth,
I don’t need no flake,
I’m not gonna fake it 'til I make it.
Don’t say my name,
Spit it out your filthy mouth,
I don’t wanna be your cake,
'Cause you’re just gonna taste it then waste it.
It’s so so sad.
You took my kindness for weakness...
Now I know what I never had…. You.
ABOUT CHESS SMITH
Chess Smith is an alt-pop singer/songwriter based in Kent, and has been a commanding presence on the Kent music scene for over a decade, most recently as critically acclaimed power vocalist for Salvation Jayne... until 2020, when an abuser tried to dull her shine, and take her power. But they didn't succeed. Despite enduring a devastating nervous breakdown at the time, Chess has rebuilt herself, become a new Mum, and is back & fighting in spectacular style with her most personal, relatable work to date.
Chess has a love for writing passionate, personal & positive songs about mental health and hitting back at toxic behaviour. With her soaring, emotive power vocals, engaging stage presence, and uncanny ability to write relatable songs with unforgettable hooks, Chess is ready to shake up the music scene, and she's not holding back. Her music is all about radical self-love, empowerment, and overcoming adversity – in a world full of competition, comparison, narcissism, and self-doubt, Chess' uplifting, anthemic songs are a welcome reminder that when we know our worth and love ourselves, we are unstoppable.
In 2020, Chess suffered a severe nervous breakdown as a result of narcissistic abuse, which forced her to take a long break from music. When she eventually started her recovery, realising that there was so little positive, uplifting messaging about surviving abuse & dealing with trauma, she chose to write music about her experiences in hopes it may help other people.
In 2025, Chess released her solo EP, 'Saving Lilibet', to great critical acclaim, co-writing with multi-talented Kent producer Fuji Hideout. Throughout the year, she embarked on a series of headline shows at numerous esteemed Kent venues, including the Art Club in Dover, The Music Workshop in Folkestone, and a final spectacular EP launch show at The Penny Theatre in Canterbury. More recently, she has performed at The Quarterhouse in Folkestone, and is currently working with Screen South to produce the music video for her upcoming single, I'm Dead to You (And That's OK).
Described by promoter Andrew Kesby as "No question one [of] the best female artist(s) in Kent right now", Chess is making serious waves on the music scene, with an important message, and a powerful voice that will not be silenced.
Chess began her career working with rock bands in London and the Southeast, touring around the UK and experimenting with different genres along the way. Raised on ABBA & Led Zeppelin, with influence from artists like Alanis Morisette, Paper Route, Chappell Roan, Holly Humberstone & Maggie Rogers, Chess' sound is a refreshing amalgamation of diverse genres with an edgy alt-pop feel. She has worked with music legends across numerous genres, including Jocelyn Brown, Emily Dolan Davies (Drummer of The Darkness/ Cher Lloyd), Paul Davis (Drummer of Sugababes/ Jericho), Ashley Kinsley (keys player for Beverly Knight), and Steve Harris (Gary Numan’s guitarist). She toured extensively with Mooli, and fronted Salvation Jayne to wild acclaim, before parting ways in 2022.

Critics' Reviews
Fame Magazine
"With a past in rock bands and a voice that won’t back down, Chess has carved out a space for vulnerability that roars."
BBC Introducing Kent
"I was pretty blown away by this from Chess Smith - [Disassociate is] an empowering and strong self-love anthem to blast out loud [...] PREACH!"
Aural Aggravation
"stirring, soulful and incredibly slick pop. That she’s drawing on experience and processing through art is powerful. That she speaks for so many is a grim reality. Chess is back, alright, and her voice needs to be heard."
The Zine UK
Gig Slutz
"fiercely impassioned, brooding vocals"
Get In Her Ears
"raw, impassioned vocals"
